Green TV
You may have noticed lately that your TV is going green -- no, you don't have to adjust the color on your screen, but the "green" trend is spreading to your cable or satellite networks as television shows are touting what we can do for the environment. Documentaries detail the state of the environment, "how-to" shows give us tips on incorporating green habits into our daily lives and weekly "magazine" shows abound, as well as entire channels dedicated to the green movement. Below are some of the shows and channels making a green splash across our TV screens. Check these out the next time you're flipping channels:
David Attenborough, British naturalist and producer, pioneered some of the best documentaries about the natural world with his Emmy-winning BBC shows,
The Blue Planet
(2001),
State of the Planet
(2002),
The Life of Mammals
(2002) and
Planet Earth
(2006). All of these shows are available on DVD, and provide a fascinating look into the fragile ecosystems and delicate balance upon which our Earth depends, told through stunning cinematography and music.
PBS, of course, has been a longtime advocate for the environment with their documentary shows such as
Nature
and
Nova
. More recently, their
Building Green TV
series features host and producer Kevin Contreras, who is as fiercely committed to building awareness as he is to building green houses.
The Discovery Channel, long a broadcasting pioneer in the environmental movement, has launched
Planet Green
, the first and only 24-hour eco-lifestyle television network with a robust online presence and community. One of their most popular shows is
Greensburg
, about a small town annihilated by an F5 tornado which decides to rebuild the entire community energy efficient and as green as possible. The show is produced by actor and environmental activist Leonardo Di Caprio. Another show that makes green hip and fun is
Battleground Earth: Ludacris vs. Tommy Lee
, in which the two music icons join the newest trend in music: 'going green.' Hip hop superstar Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and rock god Tommy Lee battle against the toxic forces destroying Mother Earth as they travel across the country on a 10-episode tour.
The modern
Green Lifestyle network
has shows ranging from green celebrities in Hollywood to green fitness and technology. CNN is airing its award-winning environmental series,
Planet in Peril
, as it examines the environmental conflicts between growing populations and natural resources. Look for a new installment on December 11 entitled "Battleground Lines."
National Geographic's
Strange Days on Planet Earth
is a multi-year landmark undertaking inspired by this vision of the future which shows how the Earth would look if key decisions to defeat climate change and ecosystem degradation were made today.
HGTV is on the green bandwagon, too, with its show,
Red Hot and Green
, "that proves cutting-edge design and great style can still be eco-friendly." And the network recently gave away a green home and hybrid vehicle in its annual
HGTV Dream Home giveaway
.
Keep watching while you think green!
And don't forget, speaking of TV, when you make the
digital transition
0n February 17, 2009, to do so eco-responsibly. See my
